Barack Obama's acceptance speech in Denver.

Mrs Philocrites and I managed to stay awake (more or less) for most nights of the Democratic National Convention, although we bailed out early Wednesday and missed Joe Biden's vice presidential nomination acceptance speech. Barack Obama's acceptance speech last night was grounded, compelling, and urgent. If you missed it, it's worth your attention.

Realize that this is a late hit, but Obama's acceptance speech was a massively partisan assault on much-maligned GOP values...he even managed to insult my grandmother with that snide remark about "pulling yourself up by the bootstraps only you ain't got no boots". The phrase "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" was my so-very Republican and so-very Protestant Easter Star member of a grandmother's favorite motto. And it just goes to show how far we have fallen as a nation and a society. Liberal Democrats just do not get it. I can't understand how people who think they are the source of their own salvation - and yes, I am a Christian - just trash those old UU values of the Pelagian and Arian heresies. I did a little bit of research as to whether there might be some conservative reaction in UU theology, and all I found was the AUC, an organization of three !! not-very- congregations swimming against the tide. A pretty darned pathetic remnant holding to what the Founding Fathers are said to have believed.

So, yes, we're all conservatives now. Long live the Church of England and long live the royalty.
