Fellow UU bloggers, interested in press releases?

A question for my fellow Unitarian Universalist bloggers: Would you be interested in signing up for an email list that would allow people to send press releases and other announcements to you?

Every so often, I hear from people — book promoters, event promoters, UUA committees, UUA staff, etc. — who want me to promote something or put them in touch with other UU bloggers who might be interested in what they're hawking. In my attempt to keep my blog narrowly focused on my own interests, I often do nothing with most of these announcements, even though I'm sure many of my readers (and your readers) would be interested in them. I also don't pass queries along to other blogs because I really don't have the time — and when I did once try to locate as many UU bloggers' email addresses as I could, it took forever and didn't generate much response.

But it seems to me that if we set up an email list that allowed bloggers to opt in and out whenever they wanted, and that allowed promoters to reach the group without having direct access to individual bloggers' names or email addresses, that might be of interest to both parties.

The idea I've come up with is a moderated email list. Only bloggers could sign on to receive email; promoters couldn't join the list, but they could send email to the list; the moderators would screen out spam and other illegitimate messages from promoters to insure that the list only distributed useful and potentially interesting information.

Does this idea strike you as useful? amendable? something you'd sign up for? Would you have any interest in serving as a list moderator?

I'd be game to receive, but not necessarily to moderate.

Though would a Yahoo! group be some solution to moderating? Automatically post them through that outlet? We could get weekly updates and check in rather than an email every time there is a message.

My only reservation is that this sort of thing smacks of spam and cluttered inboxes--which makes me a touch nervous.

Count me in, so long as this idea can be fleshed out a bit more thoroughly.

I agree with everyone so far

Yes, if sources are UU or "UU-friendly" and reliable. I would be interested in those news that may be interesting for the international audience of my Spanish-speaking blog,

Yahoo! allows that subscribers may check the messages through the Web --this would be a convenient solution for those who do not want to see their inbox cluttered with announcements (if it ever gets that popular!).

Having the list moderated was the way I could imagine screening out the inevitable spam. (The goal obviously is to ensure a high-quality service for bloggers and for publicists.)

I've never moderated a Yahoo or Google group. Does anyone know if a moderator can screen all posts prior to distribution on either service?

I'd be up for receiving email.

A moderator on Google Groups can screen posts prior to their going out.

Why would you limit recipients to bloggers? So we'd have a limited exclusivity?

How would you perceive that the Moderator would be informed of people who wanted to be on the list?

Paul, limiting the recipients to bloggers helps the list avoid becoming yet another general discussion forum. (It also keeps the promoters' inboxes free of everyone else's press releases.) The focus is on distributing materials that people want to get into the hands of UU bloggers.

Bloggers could sign up for the list -- probably simply by identifying their blog; the moderators might want to check that the blog is legitimate and is somehow related to Unitarian Universalism. I also think I'd set up a permanent page advertising the existence of the list and providing instructions to bloggers and promoters who want access to it.

I think I could moderate it on GoogleGroups.

Since this was your idea, do you want to wait and choose from among all the volunteers? :)

Mailing lists in Yahoo (and I think Google as well) may be set up as announcement lists, i.e. allowing the sending of messages to the list only to authorized users such as the owner or moderator. Thus discussion is avoided.

It sounds like more mail and things I'd feel obligated to respond to, so "no."

I'd be willing to give it a shot as a recipient although I can probably guarantee in advance I won't publish most of what I recieve (from what I understand this might include).

I'm with Pho. I doubt I'll blog much of it, but... who knows?

Worth a shot.

I'm for giving it a try. I'd sign up. I doubt I would be up to moderating, though.

Thanks for thinking this up, Philocrites. Nice idea to increase communciation, and looks like a fair number of folks would be interested. Having said that, I'm overwhelmed with email so I would not sign up.

Here's the announcement introducing UUBlogs-PR. Thanks to Paul Wilczynski for volunteering to moderate the group.
