Aiming for improved readability.

You may have noticed: I've modified the design of this site. Your comments and tweaks are welcome. I had heard over the past six months that the old white text on dark-blue background was hard on many readers' eyes. And I had started thinking my three-column approach was a bit confusing. So here's a new design. What do you think?

I don't think it works the way you intended. The content in the right column doesn't show up until you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the middle column.

At least that is how it looks in Mozilla.

Hey Chris: My "experience" was kinda like I just gotten used to the warm comfortable feeling of what it is like to "be in bed' with ya and now you have asked me to switch sides of the bed to be in! That is uncomfortable, but i shall get used to it. Bill's comment earlier is also disconcerting--all the "stuff" from and about you is harder to find. It is a long way down. However the single middle column is easier to read and none of your changes will take me away from spending quality time with you on a regular basis.

Hey Dude, right in the middle of my reading and after my previous post--I refreshed my browser and Yikes--everything changed! Now it is all just okay and right. A miracle. Be well. Gee how did you do that?

Sorry, Roger! People change... It may be that the bumped-down right column is due to a refresh problem. Try reloading the page again and see what happens.

Is anyone else seeing the problem Bill is having in Mozilla?

Yep, problems here with Safari on the Mac right here in our office. No content visible in side columns in first screen. I'll try refreshing and see what happens, and I'll also take a look in IE.

The title font size is a little large for my tastes, on this setup. Or maybe it's the combination with hard caps.

Kenneth, the hard caps in the titles should vanish the next time you refresh, and the titles should be somewhat smaller on the front page, too. I'm aware that the blue links look too indistinguishable from the main text, and am trying to come up with a better link color.

Some of you may see the main text and the underlined date in a serif font named "Georgia"; others will see pretty much the whole site in Verdana or Trebuchet MS, which have no serifs. This is due to a weird Movable Type style-sheet tendency to list "Georgia, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif" in the font-family list, even though Georgia isn't sans-serif and many people still don't seem to have it installed on their computers and I didn't consistently adjust these font-family lists. I may go back to an all-Trebuchet MS site.

As a Unitarian Universalist I claim to be open-minded, but really I feel horribly threatened by change and the exercise of power. Therefore, in a reactionary manner I must protest not only the anxiety-provoking alterations you've made, but also the authoritarian manner in which you shamelessly flaunt your dictatorial and editorial powers. Down with Philocrites the tyrant!!!

ps. It's not so bad after all.

If you miss the old site, the front page is still available in its previous form at

maybe I just needed a refresh too, or else you did some more "tweaking" because tonight it looks much better. And i give it a "thumbs up"

I'm using Mozilla and had to "reload" in order to see the new site. I like it, but I liked the old one, too. This is a little cleaner.
