The voice of God was not the storm,
The earthquake was not the Word,
The fiery mount was not God's form:
The silence was the Lord.
Like breath it reached Elijah's ear
Expectant, hushed, and sublime.
The silence held and drew him near
And bade him speak in time.
Beyond all art, beyond all word —
O God who makes voices strong —
Your silence makes our music heard:
You magnify our song.
Creative God, inspire our praise
With awe worthy of your art,
Conduct the singing of our days
And tune each living heart.
