Philocritics picnic, April 30.

Friends, you are invited to the first ever Philocritics Family Picnic on Saturday, April 30, from noon to four o'clock at the First Parish in Milton, Massachusetts — a lovely suburb just south of Boston.

You may ask yourself, "And just who is a Philocritic?" If you're a liberal religious blogger, regular reader of Philocrites, or relative of either of the above, you probably qualify. (If you are a spam robot, however, no matter how faithfully you visit the mt-comment.cgi file, you may not attend.) Children and partners are welcome — and I know that a half-dozen kids are already planning to be there, so don't be shy about bringing your brood.

Of course you can meet all of your favorite Boston-area Unitarian Universalist bloggers — Tom of Prophet Motive, the mysterious PeaceBang, the equally mysterious Fausto, Philocrites (and Mrs Philocrites!), Adam of Unity, Rick "Transparent Eye" Heller, Paul Wilczynski — who am I forgetting? — and hopefully I can even lure Pericles down from his New Hampshire polis. There are even rumors that Scott Wells (the Boy in the Bands) and Chalicechick may trek all the way from Washington, D.C. And I hope my ecumenical blogging buddies will come, too.

I'm planning to bring a big bowl of potato salad, food of my people, and encourage Philocritopicnickers to bring a potluck dish. If you're a carless urbanite (or have a car and some extra seats in Boston, Cambridge, etc., and would be willing to provide some transportation), e-mail me and we'll see what we can do.

A friend wrote to suggest that I might be overbranding this picnic a bit too much in my own honor. Quick: Let's rebrand it before my ego gets carried away! Now accepting nominations for the name of our April 30 picnic, with door prizes for the winner. (This is a serious request, folks. The picnic is not about me but about us, the Boston branch of the Interdependent Web.)

Let's not call it "Unitarian Jihad Northeast Cell Gathering". Our duty to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person would mean we'd have to bring extra food for all the Homeland Security agents whose otherwise pleasant weekends would be disrupted by an unnecessary surveillance detail.

Fausto's bit about feeding the security guys is spot-on. Lyndon Johnson's granddaugher (also the VA governor's daughter) came to my birthday party when I was a little kid.

The Secret Service agents ate ice cream.

True Story. I have pictures.

Philocritics Unitarian Universalist Liberally Religious Family Picnic works for me.

Will there be a place to cook things or heat things?

Good location, by the way ... it's all of 3 miles and 7 minutes away :)

Paul, a good question for Fausto and his good reverend: What grilling options are available at our picnic site? And for others in the immediate vicinity: Does anyone have a portable grill?

There's a kitchen with a restaurant-sized gas range and oven that Fausto is afraid to get too close to, but that Mrs. Fausto has used on occasion without adverse consequences. The Faustos could also be persuaded to bring their charcoal Weber kettle along.

Darn, rats, $#%&^*!. Rev Butter, an ecumenical blog buddy, will be in Cali that weekend. I hope it is not the last gathering of Progressive Christian and UU bloggers in real space.

(veering wildly off topic to see if that will get her comment deleted)

Just kidding... I will bring, um, some grilled things! It's a kind of marinated meat item! And then I will probably also make some kind of pasta salad with goat cheese, because I have two huge packages of it at home. Unless it's really hot out! I don't know!

I've just sent an evite to everyone I could remember who expressed interest in the picnic. If you didn't receive one and plan to attend, great! I'd love to add you if you'll email me. Spread the word.

Peacebang, please tell us your marinated grilled meat items aren't lamb kebabs.
